When your trial ends
What changes at the end of your trial — the notice cascade, the grace period, what pauses, and how to pick which monitors survive.
Every new workspace starts on a 7-day trial with the full paid experience: on-call schedules, escalation policies, multi-region probing, and advanced alerting. When the trial ends your workspace moves to the Free plan. Nothing is deleted — but a few things change, and HowlOps tells you before every step.
The notice cascade
You get a clear heads-up, never a silent loss of features:
| When | You get |
|---|---|
| 7 days left | Email + an in-app banner: "Trial ends in 7 days — what changes" |
| 1 day left | A second, personalised email: how many monitors you have, how many Free keeps, and how many would pause |
| Trial ended | An email summary + a banner with your grace-period end date and a link to the impact screen |
These are account notices — they always reach you and carry no unsubscribe link. If you upgrade at any point, the remaining notices are cancelled automatically.
The grace period
When the trial ends your workspace enters a 7-day grace period:
- Existing monitors keep running. Nothing is paused yet.
- New objects are gated to the Free plan limits (so you can't add beyond Free while over-limit).
- A banner counts down the days until the grace period ends.
What changes after grace
Once the grace period passes, the Free plan limits are enforced:
- Monitors over the Free limit are paused — never deleted. By default the newest are paused and the oldest survive, but you choose which ones survive (see below).
- Multi-region monitors freeze to their primary region.
- History retention drops to the Free window. Older check history is pruned only after a further 7 days, and the exact date is shown on the impact screen — never a silent delete.
Pick which monitors survive
Open Settings → Billing → What changes when your trial ends (or the "See what changes" button in the banner). You'll see:
- A plain diff: monitors, multi-region, and retention — before and after.
- A checklist of your active monitors. Tick the ones to keep active on Free; the rest are paused when the grace period ends. The oldest are pre-selected, but you can change them up to your Free monitor allowance.
Click Save selection to store your choices. They take effect automatically when the grace period ends.
Bringing paused monitors back
Paused monitors are never deleted — they resume the moment you upgrade. After upgrading, a paused monitor shows a prompt explaining exactly what the upgrade unlocks, with a one-click resume that un-pauses your monitors (and un-freezes multi-region) up to your new plan's limit.
